CAV | The Element of Surprise. Reconnaissance and Security forces operating forward of the main body, developing the situation, protecting the formation, and creating the time commanders need to decide and act. It speaks to Soldiers who learned that information is not simply collected. A Scout must move for it, observe for it, fight for it, and report it in time to matter.
Scouts Out
Cavalry has changed with the battlefield. Horses gave way to modern vehicles, sensors, optics, and communications, but the demand placed on the Scout remains recognizable: go forward, make contact, understand what is happening, and give the formation room to maneuver.
That work requires patience and aggression in equal measure. Cavalry Scouts must notice what others miss, communicate clearly under pressure, and operate with enough independence to develop the situation without losing sight of the commander’s purpose. Their reports help leaders understand the ground, identify threats, preserve combat power, and concentrate the force at the decisive time and place.
The CAV tumbler recognizes the routines behind that responsibility: route planning, land navigation, observation, vehicle and equipment maintenance, reporting, rehearsals, and the long hours required to remain effective forward of the main body. These experiences create a shared Scout identity without pretending every Trooper served in the same formation or faced the same mission.
