Some battles change history.
Others create legends.
The Devil Dogs of Belleau Wood honors one of the most defining moments in Marine Corps history—the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I, where the courage and determination of U.S. Marines forever cemented their reputation as one of the world’s elite fighting forces.
Between June 1 and June 26, 1918, Marines fought through dense woods, shattered terrain, relentless machine-gun fire, and fierce German resistance near Château-Thierry, France. The battle became synonymous with extraordinary sacrifice and unwavering resolve, giving rise to the legendary “Devil Dogs” legacy that Marines proudly carry to this day.
The obverse features a powerful Marine Bulldog standing defiantly amid the scarred battlefield of Belleau Wood. Wearing the iconic campaign cover bearing the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, the bulldog embodies the spirit of every Marine who refused to yield. Behind him, Marines advance through the shattered forest while the weathered Belleau Wood sign and the year 1918 anchor the design in one of the Corps’ most celebrated campaigns.
The reverse captures Marines advancing across the devastated battlefield under the inscription:
“Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue.”
Centered above the battlefield is a memorial plaque commemorating the dates of the battle and its location at Belleau Wood, Château-Thierry, France. At the base, the Marine Corps core values—Honor, Courage, Commitment—surround the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor beneath the timeless motto:
Semper Fidelis.
Every detail is sculpted in exceptionally deep relief and finished in premium antique brass to create an heirloom-quality collectible worthy of the Marines whose actions inspired generations to follow. From the weathered battlefield to the determined expressions of advancing Marines, the coin reflects the grit, sacrifice, and fighting spirit that continue to define the Corps.
Whether presented to a Marine, veteran, historian, collector, or displayed as part of a Marine Corps collection, The Devil Dogs of Belleau Wood serves as a permanent reminder that freedom has always carried a price—and that extraordinary courage often begins with ordinary Marines refusing to quit.
Their victory became legend.
Their sacrifice became tradition.
Their legacy lives on.
