He wrote them in a tent on the Danube frontier while commanding legions. He wrote them between battles. He wrote them on the days he doubted himself and the days he didn’t.

Marcus Aurelius rendered in laureate imperial portrait — laurel crown, philosopher’s beard, military cloak fastened at the shoulder, the gaze of a man who has seen everything an empire can show a person and still chose to ask harder questions of himself than of anyone around him. Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus runs the full circumference in rope border. Three phrases frame the portrait:
